Shearer has the blues

Peter Beardsley and Kevin Ball joined by cheerleaders to promote the Prince's Trust Charity Football match at St James Park on 14 October 2007

NEWCASTLE United legends Alan Shearer and Peter Beardsley are set to team up at St James’s Park, but they won’t be wearing the famous black and white stripes.

The pair have not signed for any of the club’s rivals but will be starring for a side representing the Duke of Northumberland in a charity match.

The game, to be staged next month, pitches sides from the north and south of the region against each other to raise money for the Prince’s Trust foundation.

The Duke’s side, captained by Beardsley, will wear blue kits while the team from the south of the region, which has the Earl of Durham as president and will be captained by Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, will wear yellow.

Peter said he didn’t mind switching from the famous black and white for the occasion.

He said: “I am asking all fans north of the Tyne to come along on the day wearing blue to show your support for the Duke’s side.

“I’ve worn blue for Everton. I don’t really mind not being in black and white. It should be a good match. It’s a great idea.” Former Sunderland star Kevin Ball, who will be appearing in yellow for the Earl, took up the challenge of getting fans to dress in the colour of the side they are supporting.

He said: “Let’s see by the stands who gets the most support on the day.”

Other sportsmen taking part in the event include former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand and Durham and England fast bowler Steve Harmison.

The event will also include live music and performances from two of the region’s top cheerleading troops, with the game kicking off at 4pm on Sunday October 14.

An evening celebration with a football memorabilia auction and after-dinner speakers will follow the match, with all proceeds going to disadvantaged children in the North-East.

Tickets are on sale at the NUFC Box Office on (0191) 261-1571 or at www.nufc.co.uk priced £12 for adults and £6 for children.

The evening celebration dinner is priced at £100 per person.
