Puzzling bike death

A motorcylist was killed yesterday in mysterious circumstances on a busy Tyneside road.

The 20-year-old North Tyneside man was driving west along the A1058 Coast Road, near the slip road for Heaton's Chillingham Road, when he crashed. The victim was found lying in the road and later died of his injuries.

Police had received a report of a traffic collision, but when they arrived they found no other vehicles or anyone else injured.

Officers were last night working to piece together what had happened.

Boat gutted

A FISHING boat was gutted by a late night blaze. The living area, galley and wheelhouse of The Resolute was destroyed when a fire ripped through it at 10.30pm on Sunday night.

The vessel, which is 23.3metres long, was berthed at the Fish Quay at North Shields. Firefighters at first thought that people were inside, but after they began to tackle the blaze the owner arrived at the quay and confirmed it was empty.

Woman hurt

A WOMAN was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham yesterday after the car she was in collided with another vehicle on the A693 near Annfield Plain in County Durham, at 11.20am. A man was treated at the scene by paramedics, but did not require hospital treatment.

Fire arrests

FOUR teenagers have been arrested by police after a fire at a school. Fire crews from Blyth and Cramlington were called to Newsham First School, Blyth, on Friday.

The blaze was in a large outbuilding, previously used for a toddlers' group.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on (0191) 214-6555.

The ferry's late

STORMY weather has delayed the arrival of a new cross-Tyne ferry.

Bad weather on the south coast has prevented the £1.9m Spirit of the Tyne being brought to its new North-East home.

A tug is ready to begin a four-day tow from Hampshire to South Shields, but clear weather is needed before it sets sail.

Spirit will replace The Shieldsman, which has carried more than 10 million passengers during 30 years of service.
