Go-ahead for £10m link-up

Three new public buildings, worth more than £10m, are being built in Newcastle and North Tyneside to give people access to council and health services in their communities.

The Newcastle and North Tyneside LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) partnership has given the go-ahead for buildings in Dudley and Shiremoor in North Tyneside and Gosforth, Newcastle.

The partners are also developing plans for two further local authority buildings in Benwell and Byker to be built in the longer term. Health and social care providers, with GPs and other community-based services, will be brought together under the same roof in purpose-built properties.

Fewer homeless

STATISTICS released yesterday show new cases of homelessness in the North-East have fallen by 22% compared to the same time last year.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper announced a £1.1m grant to help tackle and prevent homelessness in the region.

The statistics show 1,220 households became homeless during July to September of this year in the region.
