£123 fare
FARE dodgers on the Metro are paying much stiffer penalties for failing to buy a ticket, with court fines and costs rising to an average of £123 in the last eight months.
Magistrates are coming down harder on those who ride without tickets, and, when caught, fail to pay the £20 penalty fare.
Persistent cheats are fined up to £500.
Festive funds
MORE than 300 people supported a Christmas Fair, at Whitburn Village Primary School, helping to raise around £700 for school funds.
Headteacher Enid Fairbrother said it would be invested in ICT equipment.
Songs in aisles
SHOPPERS and staff at the MetroCentre will be able to take a break from Christmas shopping and join in some carols tomorrow.
The service will be at 3pm in Exhibition Square, outside Woolworth's, and will include a selection of old favourites and new carols provided by the band from Wallsend Salvation Army.
Green spark
DURHAM University has signed a two-year contract with npower to supply green electricity to all 240 buildings on the university estate.
The grounds include a castle which is part of a World Heritage site, Grade I and II-Listed buildings, three scheduled Ancient Monuments and a further 60 buildings within the Durham City Conservation Area.
The 24-month deal represents a total reduction in excess of 32,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
