Police seeking missing graduate find a body

Police searching for a North-East librarian who vanished after a Cambridge University dinner 11 days ago found a body in a river last night.

Maths graduate Daniel Bolger, 21, from Billy Mill, North Shields, but who lives in Cambridge, has not been seen or heard from since he left Magdalene College at about 2.30am on Sunday November 26.

His devastated parents, Paul, 57, and Pavlina, 59, of Glanton Road, Billy Mill, travelled down to Cambridge as soon as they heard their son was missing, and said the agony of waiting for news made them fear the worst.

A Cambridge police spokesman said last night a group of rowers spotted a man's body in the River Cam, near Jesus Lock, at about 3pm.

He said the dead man had not yet been identified and the area was cordoned off as detectives examined the scene.

Investigating officers say Mr Bolger, who works at the university library, left behind a coat containing his wallet and house keys, but said they did not know whether he had deliberately walked off without the coat or forgotten it.

Mr Bolger, a keen singer and member of the Jesus College choir, had been at a Gilbert and Sullivan Society dinner on Saturday.

The former St Thomas More High School pupil was last seen in the grounds of Magdalene wearing a black dinner jacket and bow-tie.

His mother, who works at the DSS offices in Longbenton, North Tyneside, said her son had sung the U2 hit song One for her and her husband as they renewed their wedding vows last year.

She said: "We can't believe what has happened."
