PM praises fuel charity

Prime Minister Tony Blair last night praised a North-East charity which campaigns against fuel poverty ahead of its 25th anniversary celebrations today.

National Energy Action will stage a celebration event at The Sage Gateshead to mark the milestone.

The organisation, based in Newcastle, promotes energy efficiency and campaigns for affordable heating.

In a message to NEA, Mr Blair said: "I would like to congratulate you on a quarter of a century of work on developing and promoting energy efficiency services and other assistance to low income households.

"It is crucially important that we all continue to work together to make energy more affordable, as well as making progress towards environmental targets. I therefore applaud the valuable work you are doing to help us meet these goals."

NEA chief executive William Gillis said: "The Prime Minister's words are extremely encouraging and supporting, but also put into perspective just how serious the issue of fuel poverty and energy efficiency has become for the Government.

"National Energy Action has achieved so much over the past quarter of a century and yet there is so much more to do if we are to beat the blight of vulnerable people living in cold, damp homes."
