Hundreds of Durham County Council staff will be working through the Christmas and New Year holidays to make sure people can access vital care.

For emergencies out of office hours, people should call the Emergency Duty Team on 0845 850-5010.

For homes with stair lifts, vertical lifts or a ceiling track hoist that are serviced by Durham County Council call (0191) 383- 5353 to report faults.

Toilet upgrade

TOILETS in Spittal, Berwick, are in urgent need of upgrading, a councillor has argued.

Coun Hazel Bettison is urging Berwick Borough Council to identify funding to carry out improvements.

Christmas fete

A CHRISTMAS fete in support of Chopwell Youth Club will take place at the community centre tomorrow.

Testing times

ROAD users will face random drink-drive spot-checks in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year, Durham Police warned.

The roadside screening of motorists will take place during the morning rush-hour, and again between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.

On selected afternoons there will be additional checks between 2pm and 6pm.

Extra services

NEW services are being planned for Berwick Infirmary.

Northumberland NHS Health Care Trust has confirmed it is hoped that a nurse-led chemotherapy service will be in place by March next year together with a fractures clinic and MRI scans.

However proposals to introduce minor eye operations have been delayed because of a lack of consultants in the region.
