Why cycle?

* Cycling causes less wear and tear on joints and muscles than any other form of exercise, making it suitable for older adults and people with joint and mobility problems.
* It burns off about 300 calories an hour.
* It can increase heart rate, leading to improved efficiency of the heart, lungs and circulatory system, which can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, obesity, stroke and other illnesses. A major study of more than 10,000 people found those who cycle at least 20 miles a week are half as likely to have heart problems as those who don't cycle at all.
* It can offset the physical effects of ageing such as decreased metabolism and muscle wasting and, crucially, boosts mood.
* Cycling promotes the build-up of lower body muscle and this can raise metabolism and increase energy levels. It also tones the legs.
