A debt of gratitude

Friend and former Olympic medalist Brendan Foster, head of Nova International, met Mr Taylor through his fundraising.

Last night he said: "Whoever you were and however you came into contact with Ross Taylor everyone will agree that time spent in his presence was always an enriching experience.

"You always felt better after talking to him.

"He clearly reached the heights in his chosen profession as a surgeon but his humanity ensured he reached even higher in his life. He was a truly great man.

"Thank you Ross for your wise counsel and for your friendship."
