Andes trip sparks a powerful idea

Campaigners get the wind up

A wind farm equivalent to at least one and half times the size of the Lake District would be needed if the Government's push for renewable energy was to be met purely through wind turbines, it was claimed today.

Jill Hatcher, senior natural resources campaigner for the Council for the Protection of Rural England, said: "This time the Government must get planning for renewables right. It must not blow it to the detriment of beautiful landscapes."

According to the CPRE, as turbines reach heights taller than the clock tower of Big Ben, their increasing number threatens to devastate the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of the English countryside.

"We need clear national planning guidance that protects the local environment in its pursuit of solutions to tackling climate change," said Ms Hatcher.

"This means wind development should steer clear of sensitive landscapes.

"We need to get the right renewables in the right places."
