They say that after a nuclear war, the only things that would survive are cockroaches. That’s no comfort to anyone finding themselves with an infestation.
Cockroaches are the scorn of most homeowners because they are so difficult to get out of the house once they’re in. The horrid little creatures seem to want to stay put once they’ve settled into your home.
Cockroaches are insects and, surprisingly, there are almost 5,000 different species. Because there are so many varieties of cockroach, it is impossible to pin down any one type of habitat they prefer.
Cockroaches can, and do, survive in a variety of environments but as a general rule they prefer warmth.
The first thing to do to get rid of cockroaches, is work out where the creatures are coming from. If you happen to see a roach, then try to follow where it goes. This may lead to the ‘nest’. Failing that, look around your house for any nooks and crannies where they could be living.
Once you’ve found the source of the problem, it’s time to take action. One way to do this is to buy a powder which is specially designed to kill cockroaches. There are several varieties of this powder, but all do the same job. Simply apply the powder to the roaches’ nest.
However, there are also other options. One is to use cockroach traps. The cockroaches are lured to the trap and then become stuck on a glue strip. These are effective, but you will need several if you have an infestation.
Another option is professional pesticides. These are very effective but can also be dangerous, so take care when using them. Before attempting this, first try using the much simpler but often equally effective solution of soap and water. Simply spray or pour the mixture onto the nest, and this should kill most of the roaches.
If you cannot get rid of the cockroaches, it may be time to call in an exterminator.
The problem is, since you have to pay for an exterminator, you are unlikely to want to have to pay out again. Therefore it is important that you employ some methods of prevention once you have got rid of the first infestation of cockroaches.
Always keep your kitchen clean. Cockroaches will be drawn to food and dirt. If you do not ensure your kitchen is clean you will be inviting the creatures back into your home.
Empty and clean your bin regularly. Cockroaches will be attracted to your rubbish, and if you leave your dustbin in a poor state then you’re likely to get roaches back.
Make sure there are no cracks in your walls. This will provide easy access for the roaches. If you find any cracks, then be sure to seal them up immediately.
Cockroaches are attracted to water, so if you have any leaks or drips in your house, make sure they are repaired as soon as possible.
Cockroaches may survive a nuclear war, but if you employ these methods they won’t survive a trip to your house!
