Working in the IT industry is exciting and rewarding. From working in a big global company with all the perks, to working for a small firm where familiarity and teamwork are key, there is no end to the type of places one can work for when in a career in IT.
Almost every company needs some form of IT system in place and will either need the services of an IT outsourcing company or a team based on site. IT systems can take an essential role in businesses and often help with, or become fundamental to, the strategy of a firm.
Senior roles in IT will often be at the very top of a company's hierarchy and important decisions on the direction of the business could fall upon those who are Directors of IT, IT Managers or Business Analyst Managers.
Senior roles can be very well paid and will often mean longer hours. In larger organisations, a Senior Manager could be responsible for a very large team, especially if the organisation is itself in the IT industry.
Working in IT in other areas such as banking or the public sector can be great experience and offers the opportunity to expand your skill-set.
IT roles will often come as contract jobs, which again, provides a very varied experience and contract workers can often find themselves in highly interesting roles. IT Project Managers can work on contracts for many different lengths of time depending on the project and the business need.
Often, those who start a career in IT will become specialised in a particular area such as Java, Oracle and Sap. These specialists are highly sought after by companies and so the role will demand a higher salary.
Working in IT can sometimes mean that travel is necessary, especially when the organisation is a global one. Larger companies rely on their IT systems and so those working in IT support can be called out at a moments notice in order to save the day.
With so much relocation going on with companies, an IT support worker could be expected to fly out to all corners of the world and some of the most remote places to maintain the IT systems.
IT training is also a popular job role for those efficient in IT systems but who prefer to spend more time with people than computers. This could vary from training staff in systems such as Microsoft Office or databases, to working on new projects and ensuring the transition of new systems is a smooth one.
Larger companies will often employ a number of IT trainers because of the importance of having a fully IT efficient workforce.
IT can be fun and dynamic. It is always at the forefront of innovation and constant new technology means there is never a dull moment. The rewards can be substantial, from both a financial and self-fulfilment perspective. No matter what size organisation, IT matters and so do those who work in it. Why not see what new career awaits you today
