MORE than 1,000 single mums and dads, and their children, from across the North East could be offered help should Gingerbread win funding through the Vote that Counts.
The national charity, which runs groups in Newcastle’s West End, Durham and Brandon, County Durham, supports single parent families by offering a wealth of advice and practical support via their website and helpline.
That includes expert help on family issues like separation and contact, money, benefits and tax credits, working and studying, child maintenance and housing.
Staff also offer training, run a campaign to improve the lives of single parent families and create friendship groups so that single parents can meet, make new friends and support each other.
Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have already supported the charity elsewhere in the country, with 10 TV’s recently given to the group’s Stoke-on-Trent arm in June, but your vote could help Gingerbread support over 1,000 single mums and dads, and their children, from across the North East when they feel isolated, are struggling to make ends meet or find it difficult to cope.
If Gingerbread won this award they could help single parents get access to the information and advice they need through its helpline and come together to support each other through membership support network and local friendship groups in the North East.
Hannah Watson, from the charity, said that in Newcastle alone there are 9,000 single-parent families.
“The cash would mean we could support more members and reach more families. Our members are really supportive and I just hope they get behind us.
“We really hope all single-parent families will vote for us and we hope everyone in the North East will get behind us.”
