STAND solid with the Rock. That’s The Journal’s appeal to the people of the North-East today.

The future of the Northern Rock is important to us all and you can help support it by opening a savings account – for a few pounds or more – with no risk attached whatsoever.

The North-based bank has reassured customers it will survive its cash-flow problems which last week forced it to ask for an unlimited emergency loan facility from the Bank of England.

That made some customers panic, but calmer heads noted that the Rock has not yet drawn on that facility.

And today we urge readers to support the region’s biggest company, for its 6,400 staff and for the charities, arts and community groups to which it gives 5% of its profits every year through the Northern Rock Foundation.

By opening an account you can show your support for a North-East institution in a way that will really help. By law, any investor of up to £2,000 will have the safety of their savings guaranteed.
