May 22 2007 By Brian Aitken, The Journal
I'm proud to say that on May 12, 2007, The Journal celebrated its 175th birthday. Launched in 1832, The Journal thrived in the mining and shipbuilding industries and grew to be an integral part of the region's life.
In the 175 years since it was first published, the newspaper has firmly established itself as the voice of the North, priding itself on its exceptional journalism and continual evolution harnessing advances in technology and design.
It has a long and proud history which was, on discussing the production of this supplement, was brought clearly into focus through the major events and ordinary human stories of an amazing period of history spanning Victorian endeavour, devastating wars, space travel and political intrigue.
But never far from The Journal's surface is a confidence of spirit which I'm proud to have the opportunity to develop and the ability to continue the marvellous work created by my predecessors so that their care and attention can be passed on to others as an example to follow.
Here's to us and here's to the next 175 years!
