NEWCASTLE United star Steve Harper last night backed a bid to save Seaton Delaval Hall.

The stately home, near Seaton Sluice, Northumberland, could be sold to private owners after Lord Hastings, the current owner, decided to sell-up.

National Trust bosses have raised £2.7m from public donations to save the building, with that cash to be added to the charity’s £6.9m pledge.

But in an effort to raise the remaining cash, the Newcastle shot-stopper yesterday signed a unique glass sculpture that will go under the hammer for the cause.

Last night Steve said: “The building is a big part of the history of Seaton Delaval and it’s the first time I’ve been able to see what an impressive building it is.

“If we could save it then it would be an important boost for the community. Having seen the passion of people who are trying to save the building, I was only too happy to help.
