National Trust staff get taste of Farne Islands life

A GROUP of people braving the elements on a windswept island with only basic rations and a series of tasks to complete may sound like the next reality TV show.
But the contestants spending the next few days camping on the Farne Islands are National Trust employees taking part in an unusual fundraiser to save a stately home.
The eight members of staff from the trusts regional building department are hoping to raise money towards a s6.3 million bid to buy Northumberlands Seaton Delaval Hall and save it for the nation.
The team, which will be on Inner Farne island from November 2 to 5, will be camping out with only essential items including tents, blankets, water and basic food rations.
But the group, who have already raised s3,425 with the event, will be able to win extra luxury items if they complete challenges set by the islands National Trust wardens.
David Steel, head warden on the Farne Islands, said: The team have got some hard tasks ahead of them. I dont want to give too much away, but the lighthouse walls havent been painted for around eight years and theres lots of essential maintenance work to do.
Were going to make the most of their time on the islands.
National Trust surveyor Stewart McPherson, who is among those taking up the challenge, said: The Farne Islands are very cold in November and it isnt going to be easy, but were ready to give it our best.
This fundraiser is the latest in a series of efforts to secure the future of the iconic hall.
Built between 1718 and 1729 by English architect Sir John Vanbrugh, Seaton Delaval Hall, with its bold architectural style, is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the English Baroque.
The house comprises a central block between two arcaded wings. Its grounds contain extensive gardens and statues, as well as a Norman church and an ice house.
In a campaign backed by The Journal, The National Trust is attempting to raise s6.3 million to buy the historic hall and 1,000-year-old estate before the end of the year.
If the money is not raised, the halls current owner, Lord Hastings, will sell the property, along with its gardens, grounds and a large area of the surrounding countryside.
