Finalists announced for North East School Awards 2011


The Schools Awards 2011

SCHOOLS and teachers around the region are in line for prizes after the announcement of this year's finalists in the North East School Awards.

For the fifth year running, The Journal has teamed up with its sister paper on Teesside, the Evening Gazette, and associate sponsor Northumbrian Water to put on the popular campaign.

The awards aim to celebrate the fantastic work taking place in our region’s classrooms and to praise the hard work and dedication of the unsung heroes of education.

There are nine awards up for grabs in total – four for projects and five for individuals.

THE FINALISTS ARE:

Sustainable School Award: Macmillan Academy, Middlesbrough; Edmondsley Primary School, County Durham; Oakfield Infant School, Gateshead.

Active Community Award: Mickley First School, Stocksfield, Northumberland; King James I Academy, Bishop Auckland, County Durham; Archibald First School, Newcastle.

Healthy School Award: Roseberry Sports and Community College, Chester-le-Street; Pallister Park Primary School, Middlesbrough; Edmondsley Primary School, County Durham.

School Newspaper Award: King Edward VI School, Morpeth, Northumberland; Manor College of Technology, Hartlepool; Longbenton Community College, North Tyneside.

Inspirational Primary School Teacher of the Year: Simon Feasey, Caedmon Primary, Middlesbrough; Michael Glenton, Sele First School, Hexham, Northumberland; Michael Churchill, Newbottle Primary School, Houghton-le-Spring.

Inspirational Secondary School Teacher of the Year: Amer Sheikh, Thornhill School, Sunderland; Stephen Elliott, King James I Academy, Bishop Auckland, County Durham; Michael McMonigle, Hurworth School, Darlington.

Support Staff of the Year: Dawne Taylor, Columbia Grange School, Sunderland; Vicky Ellis, St Paulinus RC Primary School, Guisborough; Kimberley Turner, Priory Woods School and Arts College, Middlesbrough.

Caretaker of the Year: Tanya Bullock, St Clare’s RC Primary School, Middlesbrough; Norma Hart, Bearpark Primary School, County Durham; Andrew Tweedy, Bridgewater Primary School, Newcastle.

Headteacher of the Year: Katherine Elliott, Columbia Grange School, Sunderland; Alan White, Manor College of Technology, Hartlepool; Ken Robinson, Billingham South Community Primary School.

The campaign has also won sponsorship from the University of Sunderland, Nexus and the Centre for Life. All project award winners will be presented with a £1,000 grant for their school, a trophy and certificate. Individual winners will also get a trophy and certificate.

The awards ceremony will take place on July 14 at the Centre for Life, in Newcastle’s Times Square. A supplement featuring details on all the winners and runners-up will be printed in The Journal shortly after.
