SOUTH Shields-based Colmans is a long-established town-centre fish and chip restaurant and takeaway. Owner Richard Ord is passionate about the quality of produce and attention to detail in the restaurant.
In 2008, it became National Champion on Gary Rhodes’s UKTV Local Food Hero and, the year before, it won Best UK Takeaway at the BBC Food and Farming Awards. It also holds a Sea Fish Quality Award and has been recommended by BBC Good Food Magazine and Olive magazine.
The 60-seater fish and chip restaurant was also named the UK’s second best at the National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition this year.
Greenpeace has described it as “the nearest thing to an eco-chippy” for its sustainability and environmental policies.
Mr Ord said: “This is a tremendous achievement for all the team at Colmans. We believe we have access to some of the finest fish and seafoods in the world, and are privileged to have fantastic local produce on our doorstep.”
DOUBLE Michelin star chef Kenny Atkinson of the Orangery, Rockliffe Hall, shot to fame in early 2009 with his winning performance on the BBC’s Great British Menu and has since appeared on BBC One’s popular weekend food show Saturday Kitchen. His outstanding fine-dining restaurant at the luxury hotel near Darlington has very high service standards and Kenny has a serious passion for local produce. He has introduced a changing “market menu” to reflect the best local provisions available.
LOW Urpeth Farm B&B is a high-quality bed and breakfast and self-catering business located north of Chester-le-Street.
Owners Hilary and Peter Johnson promote their breakfast as the “Cracking Urpeth Breakfast” and it certainly lives up to its name with excellent ingredients and friendly service.
The farm has been in the Johnson family since 1816. It was recognised for its contribution to the Second World War effort with a letter of thanks from Winston Churchill’s government, which hangs proudly on the wall.
Its accommodation embraces two farms and three holiday cottages to a four-star silver standard.
