Great North Run heroes shortlisted

The following year the occupational therapist competed in the run for the first time, with friends Dianne and Steve Cowen, pushing herself the entire way in just over three hours. This year marks the second year of her fight to break the stereotype surrounding disabled people.

This year’s third finalist is Jackie Jones, of Chapel Park, Newcastle.

Jackie, 39, trained as a nurse after her husband Mark, 39, a car salesman, was rushed to hospital suffering from a brain haemorrhage.

After nine hours of life-saving surgery, Mark went on to have six weeks’ radiotherapy.

Jackie, who completed the Great North Run five years ago, knew that it was the perfect way to raise money for local charity Charlie Bear for Cancer Care. She has already raised more £10,000 for the charity and was nominated for the Bupa Great North Run Award in recognition of her tireless effort. The award, in association with The Journal, is staged every year.

Last year’s winner was George Nicholson, 61, of Northside, Shadforth, County Durham, who has taken part in every Great North Run since the event was launched - even running the race after contracting MRSA.

His determination benefited a number of charities, including the hospice that cared for his granddaughter Emily, who died from a genetic disease, aged just five. The winner of this year’s award will be announced at the Great North Run Hall of Fame charity dinner on April 13 at the Newcastle Gateshead Hilton Hotel, where Sue Barker will host the star-studded proceedings.
