A KILLER stabbed his landlord to death in a row over rent, a court heard.
Former slaughterman Karl Bestford had fallen behind with his rent when landlord Simon Meech went round to collect some money from him.
Prosecutors claim Bestford stabbed Mr Meech 11 times in a murderous attack, which he denies.
When police went to the Gateshead flat Bestford had been renting from Mr Meech, they found the alleged victim’s head had been partially severed from his body.
Newcastle Crown Court heard his calves and feet had also been wrapped in bin bags, possibly with a view to disposing of his body.
Bestford later rang police and claimed Mr Meech had pulled a knife on him and said he’d grabbed it off him and stabbed him.
Bestford, 35, denies murdering Mr Meech at his flat on Raleigh Grove, Bensham, Gateshead.
Mr Meech, 46, from Whickham, died last July from his injuries.
The trial continues.
