THE helicopter pilot who died in a crash in London today has been named as former North East airman Pete Barnes.
Captain Barnes, who has piloted helicopters in action scenes in movies including Die Another Day, Tomb Raider II and Saving Private Ryan, had previously worked as a traffic and travel broadcaster for Metro Radio in the 1990s before leaving in 1997.
He was most recently working for flight operator RotorMotion in London.
During this morning's rush-hour commute, the helicopter it is believed Mr Barnes was piloting spun out of control and crash-landed near Vauxhall station after it attempted to divert to a helipad due to bad weather.
The AgustaWestland 109 Power clipped a crane on top of one of Europe’s tallest residential towers, falling from the sky before exploding into flames and crashing into the streets below, killing Mr Barnes, claiming the life of another person and injuring several others.
Captain Philip Amadeus, managing director of RotorMotion, an executive helicopter charter business, said the aircraft was on a commercial flight from Redhill, in Surrey, to Elstree.
