Police name pedestrian killed in A1(M) crash

Northumbria Police have named the pedestrian who was killed in a crash that closed the A1(M) for nearly four hours on Monday night.

Mark Bambrick, 36, from Otterburn Terrace in Jesmond, Newcastle died after being struck by a heavy goods vehicle while running across the carriageway near to the Chester-le-Street junction.

The Highways Agency had been called to reports of a broken down vehicle on the hard shoulder on the south-bound carriageway of the A1 motorway between junctions 63 and 62 at around 7pm last night, Monday, December 17.

On arrival a male pedestrian appeared from the side of the road and ran across the carriageway, the central reservation and the north-bound carriageway. Several other motorists reported seeing a pedestrian running on the hard shoulder and main carriageway south-bound.

Mr Bambrick was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV was treated for shock.
