DRIVERS are being warned to avoid Newburn after both Newburn High Street and Walbottle Road were closed due to the weather.
A spokesman for Newcastle City Council said the main road through the village was closed at midday as a precaution, with rain still falling and flooding likely later in the afternoon.
Walbottle Road, which runs alongside the recently flood hit Mill Vale Estate, was earlier closed to through traffic due to minor flooding.
"We're asking drivers to avoid the area," the spokesman, speaking at 12pm, said. "While Newburn High Street is not flooding at the moment, because water continues to fall heavily, we think it will."
The heavy rain also brought fears that an area to the north of Spencer Court could overtop, reflooding the area badly hit by floods on September 25.
