METRO drivers have called off their strike next week.
Thursday’s planned walk-out was due to cause misery as the system ground to a halt for the second time this month.
But after extensive talks, a new pay deal has been put forward and the strike has been suspended.
Thousands of Bruce Springsteen fans, due to travel to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Thursday evening, are now breathing a sight of relief.
Union members are considering the offer and have been recommended to approve it. But further action has not been ruled out.
Micky Thompson, regional leader for transport union RMT, said: “DB Regio have produced a substantial pay award. Based on that we have suspended the industrial action.
“There has been substantial movement from the company. We are now undertaking a referendum ballot with our members.
“But if our members reject it, we will return to the industrial action arena.”
