  • Cheryl Cole spotted for first time since malaria scare

    | Breaking News

POP princess Cheryl Cole has been spotted out for the first time since she was struck down with malaria. The Newcastle singer has been bed-ridden since she contracted the tropical disease earlier this month. But she was seen stopping off for a Frappuccino at a petrol station yesterday with dancer pal Derek Hough. The X Factor judge left her home for just 15 minutes when she was driven to a nearby coffee shop to get a caffeine fix before heading back to continue her recovery.Despite looking pale, she still managed a smile for the camera and looked effortlessly chic in some casual jeans, an off the shoulder white top and flip flops. An onlooker who saw the beauty at the shop just off the A3 near Guildford, Surrey, said: “Her driver was at her side every step of the way. “She spoke to the manager and the staff, who seemed to know her pretty well. “She only spent a few minutes inside. While there she signed an Aids petition and put money in a Help for Heroes charity tin.” The sighting with Derek, 25, has fuelled the ongoing speculation of a romance between the pair for the last few months.Rumours seemed founded when the American whisked Cheryl off on a romantic getaway to Tanzania in June. But not long after returning to the UK to start her busy summer schedule, the Heaton-born star collapsed at a photo-shoot and was rushed to hospital. It was initially reported to be down to exhaustion, but it was revealed she had picked up malaria believed to have been contracted on her six-day break to Tanzania. She was treated at London’s Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where she complained of headaches and sickness and spent three days in intensive care fighting the potentially fatal illness. For the past few weeks she has been under strict orders to rest at her home while she gets back to full health.Throughout her illness Cheryl has had her mum Joan Callaghan by her side, and she has had regular visits from Derek. She was so ill at one stage that she refused to let any of her closest friends, including her Girls Aloud band mates, visit her.Cheryl’s heavy workload has taken a back seat during her recovery and as well as having to pull out of the early stages of the X Factor she also had to cancel her first solo performance at this summer’s V Festival. She was hoping to return top her role a X Factor judge in time for the boot camp stages, but a spokesman for Cheryl said she still had a way to go.He said: “She will not be going back to work for a few weeks, but everyone is pleased she’s up and about.”It has been a testing few months for the singer who finally called a day on her turbulent marriage to cheating husband Ashley Cole after further reports of his infidelity surfaced. She was said to have filed for divorce papers earlier this year confirming that the relationship with the Chelsea footballer was over.
