Brave Gateshead toddler Sophie Atay loses fight for life

TOUCHING tributes have been paid to brave toddler Sophie Atay after she lost her 12-month battle with cancer.

Two-year-old Sophie, from Birtley, Gateshead, began her fight for life after she was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in February last year.

Her plight captured the hearts of the nation, including music mogul Simon Cowell, and sparked a huge fundraising drive to raise £500,000 for specialist treatment in New York.

But on Thursday night, just months after her family was told she was too ill to make the trip to America, she died in the arms of her heartbroken parents despite months of energy-sapping chemotherapy.

Droves of wellwishers flocked to the social networking site Facebook to share their memories and give heartfelt messages.

Among them was Ashley Louise Huthart who wrote: “What a little fighter you were baby, can't believe your gone. No more pain, R.I.P angel.”

Tracy Marshall wrote: “You can play with the other angels in heaven. She will look down on her mum, dad and sister thinking how lucky she was to have been a part of such a wonderful family who fought to the end for her health and happiness.”
