Jarrow care home evacuated after chemical spill

A TYNESIDE care home was evacuated following a chemical spill.

Two members of staff at the Stapleton House care home, on Borough Road, Jarrow, were taken to hospital after more than 10 litres of hydrogen peroxide seeped from containers at the site.

More than 35 firefighters were called to the scene in a bid to tackle the cleaning product spill.

At around 12noon today the team used mops to soak up the product.

Affected workers were taken to South Tyneside Hospital for a check up but were later released.

It is not yet known what caused the leak but no-one was seriously injured during the incident.

A spokeswoman from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “Seven fire engines attended scene to reports of a chemical spill in a cupboard situated on the first floor of the two-storey care home.

“Two members of staff were transported to South Tyneside Hospital after inhaling the product.”
