Fire threatens terrace of homes

FIREFIGHTERS battled to stop fire spreading into a terrace of homes after a bungalow went up in flames.
The fire broke out at the rear of the unoccupied bungalow at 35, Joicey Gardens in Stanley, Country Durham.
It quickly took hold, blazing into the roof and sending thick smoke into neighbouring properties in the terrace.
One elderly neighbour, suffering from smoke inhalation, was given oxygen and first aid by fire crews.
But she did not need hospital treatment.
Crew Manager Hall, from High Handenhold fire station, said: “The lads did a good job of stopping the fire spreading into the other properties on either side, that was a big concern of ours.
“The bungalow was well alight, there were flames and smoke visible.”
Several other homes in the street suffered slight smoke damage.
Police and fire officers are now investigating the cause of the blaze.
