Green energy company plans biomass power plant
A LEADING green energy company emerged today as the developer behind plans for an eco-friendly power station on the site of a former Northumberland pit.
Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has been selected by bosses at the Port of Blyth as the preferred developer to regenerate the town's old Bates Colliery site by building the 100 megawatt biomass power plant.
The project will generate green electricity for homes and businesses and the wood chip biomass fuel will be delivered to the site mainly through the port.
It is understood that around 100 jobs will be created at the new power plant and at the port by the scheme, which was first revealed by The Journal seven months ago.
The redundant Bates Colliery site is on the other side of the River Blyth to where RWE npower is planning a £2bn clean-coal power station at Cambois, on the site where the old Blyth Power Station used to stand.
RES says the biomass plant will generate enough electricity to power 150,000 homes a year, and will cut CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes annually.
