Washington pensioner attacked and robbed in Sulgrave street

A PENSIONER was attacked and robbed in the street in Washington.

The 66-year-old was outside Albany Catering in Waterloo Road, Sulgrave, Washington, around 10.30am when he was approached from behind by another man.

Police said that the attacker may have sustained injuries to his face when the man tried to fight him off.

He is described as being white, around 6’0" to 6’2" tall, mid to late 20’s, broad to stocky build with short hair. At the time of the robbery he was wearing a light coloured hat, green coloured bomber jacket, jeans and trainers.

Following the attack, the offender ran from the scene through the Trafalgar Road Estate, before getting into a small, blue coloured car which was being driven by an accomplice. The vehicle then drove out of the estate onto Sulgrave Road.

Detective Inspector Lisa Theaker said: "This was a very frightening experience and an unprovoked and vicious attack on a local man.

"A full investigation into this robbery is now underway and I would urge anyone with information to contact us immediately."

Witnesses should contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043.
