Jurys Inn set to build new Gateshead hotel
A NEW hotel is set to create 75 jobs on Tyneside.
Jurys Inn today announced plans for a new 200-room base by the Tyne in Gateshead.
The company said it would spend £90m on four new hotels across the country with one on Baltic Riverside.
The premium budget chain is hoping to cash in on an expected increase in visitors to the region looking for cut-price deals.
They are also looking at predictions of a rise in people taking UK holidays during the credit crunch, with more tourists expected to visit the region.
The new hotel will be Jurys Inns’ second hotel in Newcastle and is expected to open during 2010.
John Brennan, acting chief executive, said: "It is a significant vote of confidence in Newcastle that we can announce plans for a new hotel in the area in today’s challenging economic climate.
"Our positioning at the premium end of the budget market means we can be competitive with business users switching from four-star hotels and leisure customers that still want hotel pedigree and hospitality from their weekend breaks – something missing from no frills budget operators.
"I am confident that Newcastle and Gateshead can benefit from research predicting that up to 50% of Britons will holiday at home this year due to the strong euro and recession.
"With a resilient business to build on we continue to look speculatively for new locations as site valuations drop and struggling mid-market hotels close.
"We remain proactive and hungry for development and growth opportunities in the North East as the UK hotel market consolidates."
The new hotel will be in South Shore Road, Gateshead – a 10-minute walk from Newcastle city centre and the Quayside.
The chain will also be building hotels in Glasgow, Portsmouth and Bradford in a £90m investment plan.
There will be a total of 830 rooms at the hotels, which will create 300 jobs.
