Alcan wind farm gets green light
Plans to create a 13-turbine wind farm on land next to the Alcan aluminium complex at Lynemouth, Northumberland have been given the green light by the Government.
The turbines will each tower 121 metres from base to blade tip and will be 40m higher than the existing chimneys on the Alcan smelter and power station.
The scheme has been given the go-ahead after Scottish Power Renewables successfuly appealed against Castle Morpeth Council's refusal to grant planning permission in 2007.
The Government has concluded that it will help meet a national and local shortfall in renewable energy generation, and will not damage a landscape already dominated by huge industrial structures.
