Renewed appeal after care home robbery

POLICE have today renewed their appeal for witnesses after two masked raiders broke into a care home and tied up a member of staff.

The robbery happened at the Mencap home, in Candlish Street, in South Shields, at around 5am yesterday.

Two men wearing balaclavas forced entry inside the premises and tied up a woman. Her feet and hands were tied and tape was put over her mouth.

The attackers then escaped, but not before stealing a quantity of money from two cash tins. Police say the woman was shocked by the incident, but unhurt.

Det Insp Steve Appleton, of South Tyneside Police, said: "I would like to thank Mencap who have assisted us and local residents who have already contacted us in relation to this matter.

"I wish to make a further appeal to anyone who was in the area and may have seen anything suspicious in the early hours of the morning."

Immediately after the raid a cordon was placed around the site and forensic examniations were also conducted. House-to-house enquiries also took place.
