RAIL services between Newcastle and Scotland are being severely disrupted after a dead body was found on tracks in North Tyneside.
Northumbria Police were alerted to the body, near to Benton Quarry junction in Benton, at around 8.45 this morning.
A spokesman said investigations were still at an early stage and it was unclear how the body came to be on the tracks.
A spokesman for National Express East Coast advised passengers that they could face delays of up to an hour.
He said: “Services from Newcastle are being severely disrupted. Some services will be cancelled but it is too early to say how long the disruption will last for.”
Metro services are unaffected.
