Man dies after bridge plunge in Durham

A 22-year-old man has died after falling into the River Wear in Durham, police said.

A rescue operation, involving a police helicopter and firefighters, was launched when the man fell from Milburn Gate bridge on Saturday evening.

The man was pulled out of the water near the Penny Farthing footbridge but was later pronounced dead at the University Hospital of North Durham.

Police said the man would be named after family members had been informed.
