Keane gives full support to Chopra

SUNDERLAND manager Roy Keane today gave his full support to striker Michael Chopra following reports he had checked into rehab.

A national newspaper reported the Premier League striker had signed himself into a private clinic to overcome what his manager described as “personal issues“.

The 24-year-old, who joined from Cardiff City last year, has reportedly checked into the Sporting Chance Clinic in Hampshire.

The centre was set up by former Arsenal and England footballer Tony Adams, which has been used by several top players.

Roy Keane said: “We are helping Michael as he deals with some personal issues and he has the full support of everyone at the club.

“We would ask that his privacy, and that of his family, is respected at this time and the club will not be commenting further on this matter.”

A former England under-21 international, Chopra started out at Newcastle United before moving to Cardiff. Chopra has a six-month-old son with his wife, reality TV star Heather Swan, 24, who was a hit on the ITV2 show Wag’s Boutique.

It has been reported that the couple split last month after just four weeks of marriage.

A source for the player told the Daily Mirror: “Michael is desperate to save his marriage and wants to prove to Heather that he can be a better husband.

“He volunteered to go into rehab in order to readdress his relationship and bring some order into his life.

“He has battled with gambling but firmly believes these demons are in the past. Obviously, though, a period in rehab will also consolidate his progress and help him stay away from the bookies.”
