Six car pile up on the A19

A SECTION of the northbound carriageway of the A19 has been closed after a six car pile up this morning. 

The crash happened at 11.15am.

Both lanes of the road between the A690 and the A183, in the New Herrigton area of Sunderland, have been closed.

Police, fire and ambulance are at the scene and a quarter of a mile stretch of the road has been closed.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area. No other information is available as of yet - keep watching Journallive for more updates.
