Children saved by lifeboat crews in Northumberland
TWO youngsters and their pet dog were rescued from rocks off the Northumberland coastline tonight after they were caught-out by the rising tide.
At approximately 6pm lifeboat crews were called to the coast at Cresswell, four miles north of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in Northumberland.
A nine-year-old boy from Ashington, Northumberland, and a 12-year-old girl from Stakesford, Northumberland, had been playing on the rocks, known as Creswell Scars, with their pet dog.
But as the tide quickly rose, the pair’s escape route to the shore was rapidly cut-off.
One of the child’s parents was on the nearby beach, and frantically called for help when she noticed they were in trouble.
Lifeboat crews from Newbiggin RNLI raced to the scene and saved the pair from the rising tide, and neither of them were injured.
A lifeboat spokesman praised the adult’s quick-thinking but warned children to be cautious of the dangers posed by the sea.
He said: “I would stress that when we come up to the start of the school holidays then children must be vigilant about the sea’s rising tides.”
