"Robbery" barman arrested for theft

A golf club barman who claimed he was the victim of an armed robbery has been arrested by police on suspicion of theft.

Shortly before 8 p.m. last Thursday police received a report that the 21-year-old barman, working at the Mount Oswald Golf Club on the outskirts of Durham City had been robbed of £600 – the bar float from the club. The barman claimed he had been confronted by two men, one armed with a silver handgun and the other with a baseball bat, who demanded money.

He also claimed his assailants, wearing hoods with scarves pulled across their faces, bound him with Sellotape before fleeing the premises with the cash.

Officers from the Durham Neighbourhood Policing Team have since carried out a detailed investigation and last night re-interviewed the barman and a second member of staff, a 19-year-old barman, about the same incident.

Both men have now arrested on suspicion of theft. They continue to be held at Durham City police station for questioning.
