Chemical incident at airport

EMERGENCY crews raced to Durham Tees Valley Airport this morning after a chemical spill on an aircraft.

The scare at 8am was caused by a leak of 1.5 litres of sodium hydroxide solution - which can be used as paint stripper and has the potential to cause intense heat burns or ignite flammables.

One person was taken to hospital for treatment as fire crews decontaminated the aircraft wearing chemical protection outfits.
