Gateshead Thunder 6 Doncaster 22

Ryan Clarke in action for Gateshead Thunder

AN improved display by Gateshead Thunder restored hope that better times are ahead but ultimately was not enough to prevent another defeat as they fell at home to Doncaster.

Chris Hood’s men have been on the wrong end of a number of comprehensive drubbings this season with the gulf in class and playing resources all too apparent.

Indeed, were it not for the 32-each draw at London Skolars – who lie a place above them in the National Co-operative League Division One – back in April, Thunder would be rooted to the table without a point to their name.

They still have the basement boy tag, but yesterday’s display at the International Stadium will give Hood and his team a glimmer of hope that improvement is within sight.

It had not been the best of weeks for Gateshead. The previous fixture at Workington not only saw them receive an 84-12 thrashing but also two of their players, Mitchell Stevens and Reece Young being summoned to appear before RFL beaks tomorrow to answer disciplinary charges for their unruly conduct.

Yesterday looked as if this game would go the same way as many others before them as Doncaster’s Scott Spaven crossed over in six minutes for the opening try which he converted himself.

But Thunder to their credit battled back as on-loan signing Danny Wilson bagged a try before Ryan Clarke levelled the scores with his boot on the stroke of half-time.

However, fitness and stamina became an increasing issue as the second half wore on and as Gateshead tired, Doncaster took full advantage.

Tries from Chris Spurr, Mike Coady and Nev Morrison – all converted by Spaven – put a flattering twist on the winning scoreline but for Thunder, some encouraging signs that they might have turned a corner.
