Massey to make Thunder debut

GATESHEAD Thunder have completed the loan signing of Castleford prop Nathan Massey and he is set to make his debut in tomorrow’s Championship clash with Leigh Centurions, writes JAMES HUNTER.

Thunder coach Steve McCormack spent yesterday afternoon finalising the details of the Super League man’s temporary switch.

And the 19-year-old will be plunged straight into the fray at Leigh Sports Village as next-to-bottom Gateshead try to ease their relegation fears.

Thunder assistant coach Chris Hood said: “We’re really pleased to have got Nathan and he will bring some added punch to our side. He’s a young lad but he has some Super League experience and he will be a real asset to us.”

Massey’s arrival will give Thunder a boost as they look to bounce back from their 52-16 against Toulouse at the International Stadium last weekend – after turning in a performance McCormack admitted lacked passion.

At least McCormack can point to the fact he was without three key men for the Toulouse test, with hooker Andrew Henderson, full-back Nick Youngquest and centre Dylan Nash all absent.

Henderson was in Australia to attend his father’s funeral and Youngsquest got married, while Nash served a one-game suspension. All three will be back on Sunday.

McCormack said: “They are three important players and it is good to have them back in contention. Andrew returned to the UK on Thursday and has trained since, so he should be fine.

“Nick has returned from his wedding celebrations and Dylan is also available again.”

Centurions’ new signing from Doncaster, prop Mark Castle, is expected to make his debut.

Leigh boss Paul Rowley said: “Mark will come into the squad and he will play at the weekend.”
