HE does not recall ever playing 40-over cricket, but Paul Collingwood is determined to help Durham Dynamos maintain their encouraging form in the CB40 competition when their campaign resumes tomorrow.
The Emirates Durham ICG plays host to Surrey Lions (1.05pm start), with Geoff Cook’s side boasting four wins from six matches gleaned earlier in the summer.
Both Cook and Collingwood have been at pains to impress that their county’s priorities – and confidence – bridge all formats of the game.
But preparing for the “mental shift” required to switch from Thursday’s t20 win over Northamptonshire Steelbacks – when he took a hat-trick amid figures of five wickets for six runs off three overs boasting eight dot balls – to tomorrow’s 40-over fare, the former England all-rounder admits he may be forced to undergo more of an adjustment than others.
“I haven’t played an over-40 game this season,” he said.
“In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever played an over-40 game!
“I’m trying to think back and remember but I think this will be my first. During a county season you have to go from t20 games to one-dayers to four-day games.
“So it’s very much a mental shift. There are obviously some technical changes to be made but it shouldn’t change things too much because playing so much t20 cricket we can hopefully go into the longer version of the game with confidence and experience.
“It shouldn’t be too much of a problem. But it is a mental shift.
“The lads have done pretty well but we just hope that we get through and take confidence from doing well in the competition. It would be silly to prioritise one certain competition or other.
“With the talent and the size of the squad we’ve got and the skills that we have, if you just target one competition you probably wouldn’t be doing yourself justice in the other forms of the game.
