Durham v Lancashire: Day two close
DURHAM lost a wicket to the final ball of the day as they replied to Lancashire's 344.
The Riversiders were given 13 early-evening overs to survive after quickly polishing off Lancashire's tail. They had just started the last of them when Mark Stoneman fell to a beauty from Jimmy Anderson for 11.
Durham will resume tomorrow on 27-1 hoping for more of the sunshine which made batting so much easier today than it was yesterday. Michael Di Venuto is 11 not out.
The final four Red Rose wickets added 99 but they at least had the decency to hang around until Luke Sutton reached three figures.
Number 11 Simon Kerrigan was bowled the ball after wicketkeeper Sutton got to the landmark for the 11th time in a career which has also taken in Somerset and Derbyshire.
Sutton's 101 not out came off 168 balls, and featured 12 fours.
Stephen Harmison took two of the three Lancashire wickets to fall after tea before leaving the field in discomfort for the second time today after an excellent sliding stop in the field.
It stopped him adding to the wickets of Sajid Mahmood and former England team-mate Anderson.
Mahmood had hit Harmison for three fours in the 98th over and was probably thinking about a 50 when Harmison got his revenge, yorking the fast bowler to round off the over.
He claimed a second wicket in three balls when Anderson played the ball straight to short leg Stoneman, who juggled and held on.
Sutton took seven runs off the first two balls of his Mitchell Claydon over but also surrendered the strike to Kerrigan, who went next ball.
Lancashire had recovered from 110-5 yesterday to 344 all out.
