HALF-CENTURIES from Paul Collingwood and Shivnarine Chanderpaul ensured Durham Dynamos got their Pro40 campaign under way with a comfortable seven-wicket win over the Middlesex Crusaders at Uxbridge yesterday, writes JACK PICKERING.
Collingwood went on to score 78 from 66 balls with three fours and six sixes and along with Chanderpaul (58), shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 132 having earlier been reduced to 70 for three following some excellent early seam bowling from Tyron Henderson.
This after they had dismissed the Crusaders for 200 from 36.1 overs thanks to Collingwood’s fellow England cast-off Steve Harmison (4-31) and despite Middlesex batsman Owais Shah scoring 73 from 58 balls.
Durham lost their first wicket in the sixth over when Phil Mustard’s attempted pull shot flew up in the air where Shah took a simple catch. Fellow opener Michael Di Venuto slowly progressed to 25 before he became the second wicket to fall, caught at backward point with the score on 60.
Ten runs later Will Smith was clean bowled by Murali Kartik for 14 before the international duo saw the Dynamos home to victory with the last 60 runs coming in just 4.2 overs.
Earlier, having been put into bat, Middlesex were quickly into their stride as openers Ed Joyce and Billy Godleman shared a stand of 54 before Godleman fell in the 10th over.
The left-hander, on 16, looked to cut a ball that was too close from Graham Onions and chopped on to his stumps.
With the score on 86, the Crusaders lost their second wicket in the 18th over when Joyce, then on 49, played across the line and was trapped leg before wicket giving Steve Harmison his first of four wickets. Joyce had faced 42 balls with nine fours and a six. Just three balls later, Henderson was run out for one after being called for a second run by Shah which was never really there.
Shah did redeem himself by scoring a superb half-century before Eoin Morgan chipped to mid-wicket after scoring 21.
Shah continued to attack and was particularly severe on Collingwood, whose four overs went for 41 runs.
Having been struck for successive sixes in the 23rd over by Shah, Collingwood gained his revenge by running out his England one-day colleague with an excellent piece of fielding at mid-wicket.
The Crusaders soon lost Ben Scott and Shaun Udal in quick succession, both chipping to Will Smith at extra cover off the bowling of Steve Harmison.
The England bowler then saw Dawid Malan steer to backward point for 10 before Kartik ran himself out for three. The innings was wrapped up in the 37th over when Liam Plunkett snapped up Tim Murtagh for seven.
Durham are next in action tomorrow night when they face Glamorgan at Chester-le-Street with a place in this weekend’s Twenty20 Cup finals day at stake.
