Ashes a target for Steve Harmison

Harmison admits his body had begun to feel the strain of 14 years as a professional cricketer at times last season. However, he is feeling refreshed after a winter at home with the family in Ashington and he is already relishing the start of the new season with Durham.

He said: “There is still a little bit of hope at the moment so let’s see. I’m not going to do anything drastic at this stage. I feel I’ve got another tour in me with the way my body is feeling.

“I’ve had six months off, so that one more tour could be Australia. If it happens, I’ll be very surprised, but they know I can still do a job, I proved that in the last Ashes series.

“I’ve still got something to offer and if they decide they need me, I’d love to play for England again because it is a wonderful experience and the pinnacle of your career.”

Nevertheless, Harmison is weary of the constant questions about his international future as he insisted he will only be focused on doing his best for Durham as they go in search of a third successive County Championship crown. He added: “It’s like it was at the start of my career. I’ll play for Durham and hopefully I’ll play well. Everything else will look after itself.

“If I play well for Durham, they will be successful and that’s what I want most of all.”

Harmison was speaking after taking part in a Sky Sports Living for Sport cricket masterclass where he helped coach youngsters from Durham Community Business College. For more information log on to www.skysports.com/ livingforsport
