Glenn's Braves to face Scots

Glenn McCrory will launch his Braveheart super show on Thursday determined to turn it into a prominent fixture on the Newcastle sporting calendar.

His club Northumbria will take on a Scotland Select before a sell-out black-tie audience at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel.

And McCrory tells me: "I intend to make it an annual event and our own little Four Nations tournament. We're meeting Scotland this year and I'm already in talks to bring an Irish squad over next year, hopefully to be followed by Wales and England.

"I want to establish amateur boxing as a major sport in the city of Newcastle, and the fact that we've sold out our dinner show so quickly convinces me the public will welcome the idea."

Former world champion Jim Watt will be in charge of the Scots competing for the Braveheart Sword and a good smattering of celebs will be in the audience.

The Northumbria club - based in Newbiggin Hall in the city - will parade ABA finalist Mark Clauzel (pictured above) and British Boys Club champion Anthony Simpson, whose two brothers are also on the bill.

Tegan Massally, who came up from London to train under Northumbria's Cuban coaches and then joined the staff, will also feature.

McCrory, meanwhile, spent the weekend in Cyprus as a guest of the North East Artillery Regiment, who were hosting their boxing championships.
