Heaton Harriers win senior titles

HEATON Harriers won both senior titles after Saturday’s final Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League meeting at Prudhoe, writes LES VENMORE.

This is the fourth successive victory for the women’s team, but the first time the men had taken the Division One trophy.

The club were led home by James Buis who finished in sixth place with the fastest time.

The individual race was won by Morpeth’s Ian Harding and with Terry Wall in third, the Northern 12 Stage Road Race champions, looked set to extend the one-point advantage they held after the penultimate fixture. Heaton won the team race by one point, and took the title on countback.

Morpeth’s Jane Mooney won the senior women’s race from the fast pack and took the Individual title. North Shields Poly won the team event, with fifth place on the day, to give Heaton the title.

Heaton Harrier James Buis was an easy winner of the Northumberland Half-marathon at Wallington Hall. Buis extended his advantage to 2mins 42secs at the finish line over Andrew Cairns of North Shields Poly. Morpeth’s Ivan Hollingsworth took third place.

Kirstie Anderson won the women’s race. New Marske’s Ricky Stevenson won the Hartlepool Marina 5M Road Race for the fourth year. The region’s qualifiers struggled against the rest of the country, in the final of the English Schools’ Cup Cross Country event, at Alnwick Castle. Best placed teams were Central High School, Newcastle (11th in the Intermediate Girls event) and Park View Comprehensive, Chester-le-Street.
