Morpeth running right into top form

MORPETH Harriers opened up a two-point lead at the top of Division One after taking the senior men’s team title at Farringdon.

For this second Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture, Morpeth were helped by several of their A team running from the fast pack with Matthew Nicholson (pictured below), the defending individual champion, moving through to 14th and clocking the fastest time.

In ideal conditions, Patrick Vis of Durham led home the field of 367 runners over the tough three-lap course, helping his club to victory in the Division Two competition.

Liam Taylor of Sunderland Strollers finished second.

The senior women’s race, which attracted a record field of 147 runners, was won by North Eastern champion Rosie Smith of Durham.

Running from the slow pack, Smith gained victory by a large margin of 2mins 42secs.

The event incorporated a medium pack for the first time, with Durham’s Olivia Tindale the leading competitor in eighth position.

New Morpeth recruit Maxine Czarnecka was first from the fast pack, finishing in 14th position.

Durham won the team title from defending champions Heaton, who already hold a three-point lead at the top of the table.

Kelly Hewitson from Hallamshire, running in the Newcastle University colours, won the junior women’s race with Durham’s Chloe Price clocking the fastest time in sixth.

Jarrow’s George Lowry won the under-17 men’s race as Lewis Hogg of Gateshead clocked the fastest time in moving through to 10th.

Morpeth’s Philip Winkler was successful in the under-15 race.

Elswick’s Greg Chambers was the quickest runner, finishing in 16th position.

Robyn Waugh of Gateshead won the under-15 girls’ event, with Birtley’s Lydia Turner clocking the fastest time finishing in third from the fast pack.

Birtley’s Lewis Morgan led home the under-13 boys’ field and Alnwick’s Adam Weightman was fastest, finishing ninth.

Gateshead’s Ellie Mahon was successful in the under-13 race, while Max Pearson of Tynedale and Rhian Purves of Gosforth were successful in the under-11 event.
